Step beyond the classroom and experience Chinese Canadian living heritage firsthand in this special professional development day for educators.

Begin the day with an exclusive visit to the Wongs’ Benevolent Association and discover how clan associations have supported generations of Chinese migrants through mutual aid, community networks, and cultural connection. Educators will also visit Mon Keang School, established in 1925 and the longest continually operating Chinese school in Vancouver. Learn how the Wongs’ Benevolent Association continues to activate this historic space and keep its language, traditions, and cultural heritage alive today.

After a catered dim sum lunch, continue the day at the Chinese Canadian Museum with the CCM Education team. Explore current exhibitions, including Asian Comics: Evolution of an Art Form and Momentum: Power and Identity in Sports, and discover the diverse histories, stories, and contemporary experiences that can inspire classroom learning.

Educators will leave with new perspectives, practical teaching connections, and an introduction to CCM’s field trip programs and educational resources for bringing Chinese Canadian histories and stories into the classroom.

• Registration: Registration closes on October 19 or when sold out.
• Accessibility: The tour of the Wongs’ Benevolent Association and Mon Keang School involves climbing stairs in a heritage building and may not be accessible to those with mobility concerns.
• Lunch: The catered lunch will include meat (pork, beef, shrimp, fish) and vegan options that contain sesame, soy, and wheat; please let us know of any dietary restrictions when registering.

Wongs’ Benevolent Association

The Wongs’ Benevolent Association of Canada is a traditional Chinatown society organization in Vancouver. It has origins dating back to 1913 and was officially founded in 1923. Originally serving its members on surname ties, it expanded to serving the greater Chinatown community by providing cultural services and spaces. Through its long history and the Association’s elders, the Wongs have documented countless traditional practices, archived generations of aging materials and stories, many of which are traditions that are unique to Chinese Canadian society.
