The Chinese Canadian Museum began with a shared vision — to create a space where Chinese Canadian stories could be seen, heard, and celebrated. In 2017, the Province of British Columbia committed to establishing the museum, followed by a working group of community leaders and scholars across the province to help shape its purpose.

In 2020, these conversations led to the creation of the Chinese Canadian Museum In 2020, these conversations led to the creation of the Chinese Canadian Museum Society of BC. From there, momentum quickly grew — through exhibitions, partnerships, and community support — to bring the museum to life.

On July 1, 2023, the Chinese Canadian Museum opened its doors at the historic Wing Sang building in Vancouver’s Chinatown. In 2024, the museum received the Governor General’s Award from the National Trust for Canada, recognizing its impact in preserving and sharing these important stories.

Today, the museum continues to grow its impact — developing new exhibitions, expanding its reach, and earning national recognition as it builds a vibrant, inclusive institution that reflects the richness and diversity of Canada.
