Family Day 2024

Vancouver:

Build Your Own Lego Family

In the Chinese language, there are unique titles for each family member and relative. This makes it easy to distinguish all your relations in a large extended family.

Learn about your family tree in Cantonese through playing with Lego! Build your own family using Lego pieces and have them pose for an instant family portrait. Museum staff will be available to support you in learning about all the unique names of your family relations as you put together your own tree.

  • Time: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

  • Location: Community Room (Ground Floor)

  • Cost: Free with admission

Family Ties Clan Tour

Family Ties: A Guided Tour of Chinese Society Buildings

Have you wanted to learn more about your family history? Are you curious about the importance of clan societies in Chinatown?

Explore the significance of lineage, extended family ties, and cultural traditions through the lens of two Chinese clan societies that date back over a century. Join us for a guided tour of the Yue Shan Society and the Mah Society of Canada in Vancouver Chinatown, led by directors from each group. Both of these associations have strong ties to the history of the Wing Sang Building, home of the Chinese Canadian Museum.

Participants will also have an opportunity to ask about their own Chinese surname and resources to further their learning.

Offered in collaboration with the Chinatown Society Heritage Buildings Association (CSHBA).

  • Date: Monday, February 19, 2024

  • Time: 1-3 p.m.

  • Location: Sign-in at Chinese Canadian Museum, 51 East Pender St.

  • Cost: $15/person (partial proceeds will support the heritage conservation efforts of CSHBA)
