Montréal Chinois: The Lost Decades / Les Décennies Perdues Photography 1945–1960s

Montreal Chinois Exhibition Hero High Res

“Friendship. Style. Montreal. Discover the hidden archive…”

Step into a side of Montreal you’ve never seen. This exhibition unveils a rarely seen archive of Chinese Canadian life from 1945 to the 1960s, sourced from the McCord Stewart Museum. Featuring the work of Chung Hong Ho, Arthur Lee, Peter Wong, Samuel Lee, and Chuck Yip—self-taught photographers who captured friendship, swagger, and everyday flair—it reveals a world where Chinese Canadians shaped the city’s sense of style and cool.

The Chinese Canadian Museum is now permanently at home inside the Wing Sang Building. Originally a two-storey structure built in 1889 by merchant Yip Sang, the Wing Sang Building was later expanded in 1901 and 1912, and remains the oldest building in Vancouver’s Chinatown.
