Charlayne Thornton-Joe
Charlayne is the Visitor Experience and Facilities Coordinator for the Chinese Canadian Museum's Victoria Exhibit. At the Fan Tan Alley site, she is supported by a dedicated team of volunteers to ensure smooth operation of the space.
A third generation Victorian, Charlayne attended the University of Victoria where she earned a degree in Asian Studies. She previously served on the board of the Victoria Women’s Transition House Society, was President of the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria for thee years, and a director of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association. In addition, Charlayne was a long-time member of the Victoria Chinatown Lioness Lions, for which she served four terms as President. She is also a Chinese Freemason member and a member of the Jade Phoenix Club. She and her husband, Phil, for many years tended to the Chinese Cemetery at Harling Point in Victoria.
Charlayne has received many honours, including: Honorary Citizen of Victoria; a YM-YWCA Women of Distinction Award; a Woman of the Year award from Zonta; and a Distinguished Alumni award from the University of Victoria.
She served on Victoria City Council for 20 years, retiring in 2022.
In her spare time, Charlayne enjoys spending time with family and friends, playing tennis, gardening, traveling, and eating good food!
